Moulana Ilyas at Deoband, Some Facts of Darul Uloom Deoband

Moulana Ilyas at Deoband, Some Facts of Darul Uloom Deoband

In order to understand the life and movement of Moulana Ilyas (ra) it is important to know the people who formed and shaped Darul Uloom Deoband, the people who influenced Moulana Ilyas (ra). We are talking first about Shaikhul Hind Moulana Mahmud Al Hasan (ra).

Shaikhul Hind Moulana Mahmud Al Hasan (ra)

- Took preliminary Islamic studies from Ulama in his locality and in his own family, from his illustrious father

- He was the first student of this great institution and it just so happened that the first teacher was also named Mahmud, Mulla Mahmud (ra).

- Would later on be titled Shaikhul Hind as he was instrumental in India's struggle for freedom and independence from British.

Darul Uloom Deoband

- Was established in 1866 by great scholars Moulana Qasim Nanotovi (ra), Moulana Rashid Ahmed Gangohi (ra), Hazrat Syed Haji Abid Husain (ra), all khulafah of Haji Imdadullah sahab Muhajir Makki (ra) and some other highly esteemed leading ulama of the time.

- Was successor seminary of Madrasa Rahmiyyah established by Shah Abdur Rahim, the father of Shah Waliullah Dehlvi (ra).

- Shah Waliullah (ra) is said to be the most elite scholar and intellectual of the subcontinent.

- Thousands of scholars flocked to pursue studies at Madrasa Rahmiyyah, but eventually the British had closed the madrasa. After its closer many ulama were concerned about the future of Islamic sciences and Islamic knowledge in the subcontinent.

- Moulana Qasim Nanotovi (ra) greatly endeavored to establish an institution where Islamic science could be safeguarded in their purity and also be taught to the masses. So he pursued to open Darul Uloom Deoband. He had seen a dream in which the Holy Prophet salallaho alayhi wa sallam showed him a pomegranate tree and told him to start the classes there. This tree no longer exists. These are two trees planted in Deoband by the Founding Fathers of Darul Uloom Deoband:

An Almost Unheard of Figure in Darul Uloom Deoband History

Haji Syed Abid Husain

- Lived from 1834 and passed away in 1912, he was a key figure in the establishment of the Darul Uloom.

- He had come to Delhi in pursuit of Islamic sciences but he could achieve his objective in them because of his intense attachment and preoccupation with tasawwuf.

- He was khalifah (spiritual successor) of two great shaikhs of tasawwuf; Hazrath Haji Imdadullah Muhajir Makki (ra) and Hazrath Mian Ji Karim Baqsh Rampuri (ra).

- He was a very saintly person and he was a master of amaliyaat.

- For 30 years he never missed Takbir e Ula (the first takbir) of any prayer.

- He was known as a regular of tahajjud and never missed a prayer for 60 years.

- He was the first fundraiser for the Darul Uloom, as stated in Sawaneh Makhtuta:

"One day at the time of Ishraq (which is 20 minutes after sunrise), Haji Syed Muhammad Abid, making a wallet of a white handkerchief and putting three rupees in it from his own pocket, went all alone from the Chhatta Mosque to call upon (the late) Maulawi Mehtab Ali, Maulawi Sahib donated six rupees most cheerfully and also gave his blessings. Maulawi Fazlur Rahman donated twelve rupees and this humble one (Haji Fazle Haq, author of the Sawanh-e Makhtuta), six. Rising up from there, he went to Maulawi Zulfiqar Ali (may Allah keep him safe!). Maulawi Sahib, as Allah willet, is a patron of knowledge; promptly he gave twelve rupees. By a lucky coincidence, Syed Zulfiqar Ali thani Deobandi was also present there; on his behalf too, the former donated twelve rupees. Getting up from there this kingly dervish reached Mohalla Abul Barakat. By this time two hundred rupees had been collected; by dusk fall, three hundred. Then gradually it became the talk of the town and took air, and it is well known the way it effloresced and fructified. This thing happened on Friday, 2nd Zi-qa'da, 1282 A.H".
